Santa Bárbara Hospital, in the northern part of the city, is the province's reference hospital. From Ágreda, El Burgo de Osma or the southern villages an appointment means a long trip, and for some specialities patients are referred outside the province.

On arrival: Soria y su tierra

The city of Soria, on the banks of the Duero, holds the hospital, the station, the province's services and a large share of its population. It is where people come from far-flung villages for appointments and paperwork, and where most trips to Madrid, Zaragoza and Logroño begin.

When demand peaks

• San Juan and San Pedro fiestas (late June and early July): Soria's San Juan fiestas, with the Jueves La Saca among their best-known days, are the biggest in the province and bring back many people from Soria who live elsewhere. There are closures in the centre and a lot of night-time travel between the capital and the villages.

Tip: If you are catching the train at Medinaceli, give the exact train time: the station is in the lower part of town and there is little to do there if you arrive early.
