El Burgo de Osma, San Esteban de Gormaz and Almazán: to Madrid and Barajas along the A-1 or the A-2, and when Valladolid airport makes sense

From the Tierras del Burgo and San Esteban, in the west of Soria, Madrid is reached on the N-122 and the A-11 to Aranda de Duero and then on the A-1, which crosses Somosierra and enters the capital from the north, with Barajas close to that entry: from El Burgo de Osma it is 166 km, about 129 min, from 214,64 €. Almazán, by contrast, sits on the A-15 corridor towards Medinaceli and the A-2, and Barajas is 185 km away entering from the east. None of the three towns has a useful train: Almazán goes up to Medinaceli station, 40 km away, and El Burgo and San Esteban depend on the car. For flights departing from Villanubla, Valladolid is 150 km from El Burgo following the Duero.

Why do the west and the south of Soria not go to Madrid by the same road?

Because the province is large and the capital sits in the middle, far from both. El Burgo de Osma and San Esteban de Gormaz, on the banks of the Duero near the Burgos border, are closer to Aranda de Duero than to Soria for many errands, and their natural way out towards Madrid is the N-122 and the stretches of the A-11 to Aranda, where the A-1 begins. Almazán, south of the capital, lies on the A-15, which drops to Medinaceli and joins the A-2 towards Guadalajara and Madrid. The two routes are of similar length and enter Madrid from opposite sides: the A-1 from the north, next to the exit for the airport, and the A-2 from the east, with Barajas before you reach the city.

The province page advises residents of El Burgo and San Esteban: the route via Aranda and the A-1 is usually more direct than going via Soria, and it is worth saying so when booking if you have a preference. In practice the driver chooses according to the final destination in Madrid: for Chamartín, for the hospitals in the north of the capital and for Barajas, the A-1; for Atocha or the south of Madrid, the A-2 may pay off if the starting point is closer to Almazán than to San Esteban. From El Burgo de Osma to Chamartín is 168 km, and from San Esteban to Barajas, 153 km; each route has its page with the distance, the estimated time and the "from" fare.

How do you get from El Burgo de Osma and San Esteban to Madrid and Barajas on the A-1?

The journey follows the Duero westwards: from El Burgo to San Esteban on the N-122, and from San Esteban to Aranda de Duero on the stretches of the Duero motorway already open and the trunk road where they are missing. At Aranda you take the A-1 south, which climbs to the Somosierra pass, crosses the range and comes down to Madrid through Buitrago and San Agustín del Guadalix. Barajas is reached from the A-1 via the M-40 or the northern service roads without entering the city. The El Burgo de Osma to Barajas route is 166 km and about 129 min in daytime, from 214,64 € per car.

Somosierra is the corridor's delicate point: it is the highest pass on the A-1 and in winter snow sometimes forces the pass to close to lorries or requires chains, and the Directorate-General of Traffic publishes it in real time. That is why a morning flight from El Burgo or San Esteban is booked with a margin, and the driver checks the state of the pass the day before. There is no reasonable public alternative: the scheduled coach from El Burgo towards Madrid does not leave in time for the first flights, and the nearest train with services to Madrid is out of reach on foot. The car with a driver is, in this area, the link that joins the village with the airport without leaving the family car in a Barajas car park for a week.

And from Almazán: Medinaceli station and the A-2?

Almazán has what El Burgo lacks: a station with trains to Madrid within a reasonable distance. It is Medinaceli, on the conventional Madrid–Zaragoza line, in the lower part of the municipality and far from the hilltop village; for Almazán and the villages of its district it is the station with the most services towards the capital, and it lies 40 km and about 27 min away along the A-15. The transfer is booked with the train time, and the driver adjusts the departure so as not to arrive too early, because there is not much to do at the station. For the return, with the train number, the driver waits at the door and follows the actual arrival in the app.

When the train does not fit, or when several people travel with luggage, Almazán goes down to Madrid by road: A-15 to Medinaceli and A-2 through Guadalajara, Alcalá de Henares and Torrejón, with Barajas before you enter the city. The Almazán to Barajas route is 185 km and the published fixed price is from 230,44 €; to central Madrid, 191 km. It is the same corridor the city of Soria uses, with the advantage of already being halfway to Medinaceli. At Arcos de Jalón, further south-east, the A-2 runs past the door and the trip to Madrid does not even touch Soria province beyond the Jalón valley.

When does Valladolid airport make more sense than Barajas?

Valladolid airport, at Villanubla on the outskirts of the city, has few destinations and few flights, but for the west of Soria it is closer than Barajas: from El Burgo de Osma it is reached following the Duero through Aranda and Peñafiel, 150 km to Valladolid, and from Almazán, 203 km. It makes sense when the flight leaves from there, of course, and also when the trip combines the airport with business in the regional capital or an appointment at the Valladolid hospitals, to which Soria patients are referred for some specialities. The destinations and the season of each air route are published by Aena, and it is worth checking them before deciding.

For almost everything else, Barajas wins: more flights, more times and the chance to come home the same day. What changes is the road, and that is where the honest comparison lies. From El Burgo and San Esteban, Barajas via the A-1 and Valladolid along the Duero are journeys of similar length, and the choice depends on the flight; from Almazán, Barajas via the A-2 is clearly shorter than Valladolid. In both cases no train or coach reaches an airport in time for a morning flight, and the car with a driver fixes the price before booking, collects you at your front door and, on the return, waits in arrivals with a sign and the flight number.

How do you book the transfer, and what should you know in winter and at fiesta time?

You book on the website or in the app with the address in El Burgo, San Esteban, Almazán or any village in the three areas, the exact destination, the date and the time; the price is fixed before you confirm and is per car, luggage included. For a flight you give the number, for a train the time, and for a Madrid address the street and door number. If the trip is a return, it is worth booking both legs at once: the return from Barajas or Chamartín carries the flight or train number and the driver waits in arrivals or at the station door with a sign. Anyone travelling for a company asks for an invoice or uses a company account, and anyone who needs an adapted vehicle or a child seat says so when booking.

Winter rules on both routes: Somosierra on the A-1 and the Medinaceli plateau on the A-2 may have snow or fog from December to March, and the province page asks you to mention any forecast when booking so the time can be adjusted. In summer the demand changes: the villages of the Duero banks and the Almazán district multiply their population in July and August, with arrivals and departures bunched at the start and end of the month, and each village's fiestas bring night-time transfers. In autumn, the mushroom season and food tourism fill El Burgo de Osma at weekends. In every case the price does not change for a holiday or high season; what helps is booking several days ahead.
