Río Lobos Canyon, Laguna Negra and Numancia without a car: how to visit them from Soria, El Burgo de Osma and Pinares with a car and driver that waits

The three most visited places in Soria lie outside the towns and without any useful public transport: the Río Lobos Canyon, a natural park shared with Burgos, is entered from Ucero, next to El Burgo de Osma, and from the car park you continue on foot to the San Bartolomé hermitage; the Laguna Negra, glacial, in the Urbión range and the municipality of Vinuesa, has car access regulated in high season; and Numancia, the Celtiberian town that held out against Rome, occupies the hill at Garray, 9 km from the city of Soria, with no regular bus. The advice holds for all three: without your own car, book the outbound and return trips together, because there is no way to call for another car out there. From Soria, the Canyon is 78 km and the Laguna Negra 52 km; Numancia, from 20,17 €.

What are the Río Lobos Canyon, the Laguna Negra and Numancia, and why can you not get there without a car?

They are three different landscapes within a single province. The Río Lobos Canyon is a limestone gorge of sheer walls and griffon vultures, declared a natural park by the Junta de Castilla y León and shared with Burgos province, with the Templar hermitage of San Bartolomé at the bottom of the canyon and the park visitor centre in Ucero. The Laguna Negra is a lake of glacial origin at the foot of the Urbión peaks, surrounded by pine forest and by a legend Antonio Machado turned into a poem; it lies in the municipality of Vinuesa, high in the range. Numancia is the Celtiberian town razed by Scipio after a famous siege, excavated on the Muela hill at Garray, with its streets, reconstructed houses and the Numantine Museum in Soria as a complement.

What they share is the arrival. None of the three is in a town with a station or a bus stop that works for a visit: the Canyon is entered on a local road from Ucero or from San Leonardo; the Laguna Negra lies at the end of a mountain road with a car park and, in high season, regulated car access; Numancia, though a step from Soria, has no regular public transport from the city and is almost always visited by car. The province page says it of all three: they are outside the towns, with no useful transport, and if you go without your own car you must arrange the return when booking the outbound trip. The car with a driver that takes you, waits and brings you back is, for the traveller arriving by train or coach, the way to see them.

How do you visit the Río Lobos Canyon from Soria or from El Burgo de Osma?

The classic entrance is at Ucero, at the southern end of the park, a step from El Burgo de Osma: there you find the park visitor centre, the car park and the start of the path that follows the river up to the San Bartolomé hermitage and the great cave, a flat there-and-back walk most visitors do in a morning. From El Burgo de Osma the Canyon is 21 km away, and from San Esteban de Gormaz, 33 km; from the city of Soria it is 78 km and about 87 min on the N-122 and through Calatañazor, from 116,10 €. The driver drops you at the Ucero car park, waits for the agreed time and collects you at the appointed hour, or comes back from El Burgo if the wait is long.

Two things are worth knowing before booking. The first is the season: on spring and autumn weekends the Ucero car park fills up, and in the mushroom season, in autumn, the whole area around El Burgo and the pine forests fills with foragers; arriving with a driver who drops you at the entrance saves circling in search of a space. The second is that the park has other entrances, from San Leonardo de Yagüe to the north, 25 km, and from Hontoria del Pinar, already in Burgos, which let you combine the visit with Pinares. The visitor centre's opening hours and the access restrictions during the birds' breeding season are published by the Junta on its natural areas portal and are worth checking.

How do you get up to the Laguna Negra, and what about the regulated access?

From Soria you climb the Vinuesa road, past the Cuerda del Pozo reservoir, and from the village a mountain road leads to the lake car park; in Pinares, Covaleda and Duruelo de la Sierra lie on the other side of the range and arrive through the same Vinuesa. Soria to the Laguna Negra is 52 km and about 67 min; from Covaleda, 31 km; from Almazán, 83 km. From the car park there is a walk on foot to the shore, with a gradient, and from there the paths set off to the Urbión peaks and the source of the Duero for anyone who wants to walk further.

The province page warns of what surprises people most: in high season car access to the lake is regulated and vehicles stay in a lower car park, from which a shuttle service or the path itself takes you up, so it is worth asking when booking where passengers are dropped off and picked up. The Junta de Castilla y León publishes the dates and conditions of that regulation each year on its natural areas portal. In winter the road may be closed by snow, and in summer the hottest weekends fill up from first thing. The driver knows the drop-off point that applies in each season and confirms it the day before; for a family with children or for anyone who would rather not walk the slope, choosing the right day and hour changes the visit.

How do you get to Numancia from Soria, and how do you combine it with the city?

Numancia is the short visit: the site is on the Muela hill at Garray, 9 km north of the city of Soria on the Logroño road, with a car park at the foot of the hill and a signposted route through the streets of the Celtiberian and Roman town. From Soria the transfer costs from 20,17 €, and the usual thing is to book it with waiting, because the visit takes an hour or two and there is no regular bus back to the city. From Almazán, Numancia is 43 km away, and from Ágreda, 59 km, in both cases passing through the capital.

The visit gains when it is joined to the city: the Numantine Museum, on Soria's Paseo del Espolón, holds what has been excavated on the hill and explains the siege and the resistance, and the logical thing is to see it before or after the site. Anyone arriving in Soria by train or coach can organise the morning as a single service: pickup at the station or the hotel, Numancia with waiting, back to the museum and, if time allows, the San Saturio hermitage and the San Juan de Duero cloister, on the riverbank, which have no bus either. The opening hours of the site and the museum, which close on some days of the week and change between winter and summer, are published by the Junta de Castilla y León, and it is worth checking them before fixing the time.

How do you organise a day with waiting and a booked return, and what does it cost?

You book it as a single service with the stops and the time at each: for example, Soria, Numancia with waiting, Laguna Negra with waiting and back to Soria; or El Burgo de Osma, Río Lobos Canyon with waiting and back. The calculator gives the full price before confirming, per car and not per person, with the waiting inside; if the visit runs long, you tell the driver from the app and the return adjusts. A family or a group of friends filling a car pays the same amount as one person, and for larger groups several cars are coordinated on the same tour, as the knowledge centre piece on group transport explains. Each route also has its page with the "from" fare for the single leg.

A note on the Soria seasons that affect all three sites. The San Juan fiestas, in late June, fill the capital and close the centre, and transfers to Numancia on those days leave from the pickup point the city council allows. Autumn is the season for mushrooms and for the Río Lobos Canyon, with weekends of full car parks. Winter, from December to March, may close the Laguna Negra road and require chains in the hills, and the driver checks the day before. Summer brings the people of Soria back to their villages and the hottest weekends to the lake; weekdays are better for visiting. In every case the price does not change by season: what changes is how sensible it is to book a few days ahead.

Frequently asked questions

Can you get to the Laguna Negra or the Río Lobos Canyon by bus?

There is no bus that reaches either for a visit: the Laguna Negra is at the end of a mountain road from Vinuesa and the Canyon is entered from Ucero. The province page advises booking the outbound and return trips together, because there is no way to call another car out there.

How much is Soria to Numancia with a driver?

The published "from" fare is 20,17 € for 9 km. The usual thing is to book it with waiting and return as a single service; the calculator gives the full price with the visiting time.

How far can the car go at the Laguna Negra in summer?

In high season access is regulated and vehicles stay in the lower car park; from there you go up by shuttle or on foot. The Junta publishes the dates each year and the driver confirms the drop-off and pickup point the day before.

Can you do the Río Lobos Canyon and the Laguna Negra in the same day?

Yes, as a single service with two waits, though it is a long day: from Soria the Canyon is 78 km and the Laguna Negra 52 km, in different directions. From Covaleda the lake is 31 km away and the Canyon combines better with El Burgo de Osma.

What if the visit runs long while the driver is waiting?

You let the driver know from the app or by phone and the return adjusts; the waiting is inside the fixed price under the conditions published on the help page. At the Laguna Negra and Ucero there is not always coverage, so it is best to agree the pickup time before getting out of the car.
