El Burgo de Osma, with its cathedral, and San Esteban de Gormaz, on the banks of the Duero, make up the west of the province, close to the Burgos border and near the Río Lobos Canyon. There is weekend tourism, food and vineyards, and for many errands Aranda de Duero is closer than the city of Soria.

Distances within Soria province are long and public transport scarce: many villages have one bus a day to the capital, or none. The most common internal trips are to Santa Bárbara Hospital and Soria station, and from the southern villages to Medinaceli station.

The Río Lobos Canyon is a natural park shared between Soria and Burgos, reached from Ucero near El Burgo de Osma, with the San Bartolomé hermitage at the bottom of the canyon. From the car park the way continues on foot, and it fills up on spring and autumn weekends.

When demand peaks

• Mushroom season (autumn): In autumn Soria's pine forests draw many mushroom hunters and food tourists, especially at weekends. Travel to the villages and around El Burgo de Osma and the Río Lobos increases.

Tip: If you are catching the train at Medinaceli, give the exact train time: the station is in the lower part of town and there is little to do there if you arrive early.
