El Burgo de Osma, with its cathedral, and San Esteban de Gormaz, on the banks of the Duero, make up the west of the province, close to the Burgos border and near the Río Lobos Canyon. There is weekend tourism, food and vineyards, and for many errands Aranda de Duero is closer than the city of Soria.

Which way it goes

To the north, the N-111 crosses the Piqueras pass towards Logroño; to the east, the N-122 leaves via Ágreda for Tarazona and Zaragoza; to the north-west, the N-234 leads to Burgos. Valladolid is reached via El Burgo de Osma and Aranda, and Guadalajara via Medinaceli and the A-2.

Logroño lies to the north, beyond the Piqueras pass on the N-111. It is a trip for work, hospital visits and connecting with the Ebro motorway, and in winter it depends on the state of the pass.

When demand peaks

• Snow on Piqueras and the Moncayo (December to March): Soria is one of the coldest provinces in Spain, and in winter the Piqueras pass and the Moncayo heights may require chains. Trips to Logroño, the airport or the station need more margin in those weeks.

Tip: If you are catching the train at Medinaceli, give the exact train time: the station is in the lower part of town and there is little to do there if you arrive early.
