Soria station has few trains, regional services on a line that reaches Madrid through Guadalajara, with no high-speed rail. That is why many people in Soria prefer the road, and those who do take the train often need a lift from their village at exactly the right time.

The city of Soria, on the banks of the Duero, holds the hospital, the station, the province's services and a large share of its population. It is where people come from far-flung villages for appointments and paperwork, and where most trips to Madrid, Zaragoza and Logroño begin.

When demand peaks

• San Juan and San Pedro fiestas (late June and early July): Soria's San Juan fiestas, with the Jueves La Saca among their best-known days, are the biggest in the province and bring back many people from Soria who live elsewhere. There are closures in the centre and a lot of night-time travel between the capital and the villages.

Tip: For Numancia or the Río Lobos Canyon without your own car, book both ways at once: there is no transport to improvise the return from there.
