Almazán, on the Duero south of the capital, heads an area of pine woods and cereal fields with small, scattered villages. It lies on the natural route from Soria to Madrid, and its residents rely on the capital for hospital care and on the A-2 for everything else.

Which way it goes

To the north, the N-111 crosses the Piqueras pass towards Logroño; to the east, the N-122 leaves via Ágreda for Tarazona and Zaragoza; to the north-west, the N-234 leads to Burgos. Valladolid is reached via El Burgo de Osma and Aranda, and Guadalajara via Medinaceli and the A-2.

Burgos lies to the north-west along the N-234, which crosses the pine-forest country between the two provinces. It is a trip for errands and for connecting with trains and motorways to the north.

On arrival: Alfoz de Burgos

The city of Burgos holds the university hospital, Rosa de Lima station, the cathedral and the Museum of Human Evolution, and is where the whole province comes for appointments and paperwork. It also has large industrial estates, with shift changes at hours when there are no buses.

Tip: If you are catching the train at Medinaceli, give the exact train time: the station is in the lower part of town and there is little to do there if you arrive early.
