Almazán, on the Duero south of the capital, heads an area of pine woods and cereal fields with small, scattered villages. It lies on the natural route from Soria to Madrid, and its residents rely on the capital for hospital care and on the A-2 for everything else.

Which way it goes

To the north, the N-111 crosses the Piqueras pass towards Logroño; to the east, the N-122 leaves via Ágreda for Tarazona and Zaragoza; to the north-west, the N-234 leads to Burgos. Valladolid is reached via El Burgo de Osma and Aranda, and Guadalajara via Medinaceli and the A-2.

Zaragoza lies to the east along the N-122, through Ágreda and Tarazona. From the Moncayo it is the main city for work, shopping and high-speed trains, as well as its airport.

Tip: From El Burgo de Osma or San Esteban to Madrid, the route via Aranda and the A-1 is usually more direct than going via Soria; say so if you have a preference.
