Almazán, on the Duero south of the capital, heads an area of pine woods and cereal fields with small, scattered villages. It lies on the natural route from Soria to Madrid, and its residents rely on the capital for hospital care and on the A-2 for everything else.

Which way it goes

To the north, the N-111 crosses the Piqueras pass towards Logroño; to the east, the N-122 leaves via Ágreda for Tarazona and Zaragoza; to the north-west, the N-234 leads to Burgos. Valladolid is reached via El Burgo de Osma and Aranda, and Guadalajara via Medinaceli and the A-2.

Guadalajara lies to the south via Medinaceli and the A-2, on the way to Madrid. It is a stop for errands and for connecting with the high-speed train at its station on the outskirts, and with commuter trains into Madrid.

The capital and the towns around it — Marchamalo, Cabanillas del Campo, Yunquera de Henares and Chiloeches — form a continuous area along the Henares valley. This is where the University Hospital, the commuter-rail station and the province's services are, with the high-speed station close by in Yebes.

Tip: From El Burgo de Osma or San Esteban to Madrid, the route via Aranda and the A-1 is usually more direct than going via Soria; say so if you have a preference.
